Adventures Before Christmas

I must start off by stating that I have officially graduated from Missouri State University’s graduate program. I now hold a Master’s Degree of Biology :) Now… The Adventures before Christmas: Dec 11, 2013 A few days before Jacob left home for the States, the three of us ventured to Cabrits National Park and For Shirley.   “The fortification of Prince Rupert’s began after the Treaty of Paris had ceded Dominica to Britain in 1763. The first small battery appears to have been erected in about 1765. Military engineers identified the site as a strategic post to defend the north of Dominica from the French and for the protection of the Royal Navy when on call to refresh its ships. A few notes

A few notes: The semester wrapped up on December 13 after a long week of testing. However, I wanted to share a bit about my adapted life in Dominica during the semester.  Saturday Morning Market: Every Saturday morning, there is a local “farmers” market in Portsmouth. It is about 1.5 mile walk from our house, and each time is a different adventure. The market is very similar to the States, however, goods are significantly cheaper. Commonly, I am able to purchase 6 passion fruits for 4-5$EC or buy heads of lettuce that 3 individuals can for salad at least twice! Only for 5$EC. I have grown a deep appreciation for the locals and their produce that they sell. Although, some locals see a ‘white girl’ and double the price… I call BS and walk away. After Care and Substitute Teaching: I was fortunate to obtain a position at the Ross University Preparatory School (Pre K – 8 th grade). Soufriere Bay & Champagne Beach

Soufriere Bay & Champagne Beach A weekly adventure took several spouses to Soufriere Bay & Champagne Beach.  This was my second time out snorkeling since my arrival. Snorkeling Group Soufriere is a small village outside of Roseau, the capital city.  The bay itself is a submarine volcano, in which the vent heat the seawater in the pool at the water's edge. In fact, there is a small spa that you could stop in! Soufriere Bay was a black sand beach with large boulders and dramatic underwater walls.     Inside the local church Local chruch Hot spa at the waters edge The second stop was to Champagne Beach. Unlike Soufriere, Champagne Beach was a white sand beach. The water was a little murky, however, the “champagne” bubbles were still obvious. Boiling Lake: Inside a Volcano

Yesterday, I conquered the most difficult and demanding hike on the island, Boiling Lake. In fact, this was my first hike on the island!! Eleven of us grouped together in early morning, all reaching for the same goal/sense of accomplishment. Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois National Park. The hike to Boiling Lake takes approximately 6 hours to complete. It is 8 miles of extreme terrain; passing through sulfur springs, overs mountains, and through gorges along the way.  The first part of the trial brings us from Titou Groge to Breakfast River.  This portion of the hike was a gradual incline for almost an hour, ending at the beautiful clear water of Breakfast River. The river is pure water (one could drink the water with no filtration) and several individuals topped off their water bottles here.
