Boiling Lake: Inside a Volcano

Yesterday, I conquered the most difficult and demanding hike on the island, Boiling Lake. In fact, this was my first hike on the island!! Eleven of us grouped together in early morning, all reaching for the same goal/sense of accomplishment. Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois National Park. The hike to Boiling Lake takes approximately 6 hours to complete. It is 8 miles of extreme terrain; passing through sulfur springs, overs mountains, and through gorges along the way.  The first part of the trial brings us from Titou Groge to Breakfast River.  This portion of the hike was a gradual incline for almost an hour, ending at the beautiful clear water of Breakfast River. The river is pure water (one could drink the water with no filtration) and several individuals topped off their water bottles here. First Weekend in DOM

My first week on  the island has gone by quickly. Garth seems to settling in too! On Saturday morning, we took a walk down to the beach for Garth to swim in the ocean. Although he was skittish at first, he quickly settled into his normal playful routine. Soon after he was judging the waves, so that he didn’t swim against the current! However, the crabs and lizards on the beach were a distraction from us. Garth's first encounter with the ocean (off lead) Also on Saturday I was able to attend the Ross Spouse Organization (RSO) Farwell Banquet. The banquets is held once a semester for all the spouses to get together, have some fun, and say a group goodbye to the ones that are leaving at the end of the semester. The banquet was entitled the Black and Orange Ball and was held at a Chinese restaurant called Riverside International. Along with great food and (Screamscicle) drinks, there was face painting!
