First Weekend in DOM

My first week on the island has gone by quickly. Garth seems to settling in too!




On Saturday morning, we took a walk down to the beach for Garth to swim in the ocean. Although he was skittish at first, he quickly settled into his normal playful routine. Soon after he was judging the waves, so that he didn’t swim against the current! However, the crabs and lizards on the beach were a distraction from us.

Also on Saturday I was able to attend the Ross Spouse Organization (RSO) Farwell Banquet. The banquets is held once a semester for all the spouses to get together, have some fun, and say a group goodbye to the ones that are leaving at the end of the semester. The banquet was entitled the Black and Orange Ball and was held at a Chinese restaurant called Riverside International. Along with great food and (Screamscicle) drinks, there was face painting! The artist was amazing too. By the end of the night, majority of the spouses had unique designs on their face. Overall, the banquet was a wonderful time, and it was a great way for me to get involved with RSO. 








Also, I found a great spot to hang my hammock! There is always a breeze on the back porch too!

A few notes: The semester wrapped up on December 13 after a long week of testing. However, I wanted to share a bit about my adapted life in Dominica during the semester.  Saturday Morning Market: Every Saturday morning, there is a local “farmers” market in Portsmouth. It is about 1.5 mile walk from our house, and each time is a different adventure. The market is very similar to the States, however, goods are significantly cheaper. Commonly, I am able to purchase 6 passion fruits for 4-5$EC or buy heads of lettuce that 3 individuals can for salad at least twice! Only for 5$EC. I have grown a deep appreciation for the locals and their produce that they sell. Although, some locals see a ‘white girl’ and double the price… I call BS and walk away. Adventures Before Christmas

I must start off by stating that I have officially graduated from Missouri State University’s graduate program.
